Since young, I’ve always been intrigued about Hinduism and its epic stories. My dance guru also always talked about the importance of meditating and doing the Yoga asanas and just being involved spiritually. Unfortunately, as a young girl, I never really understood what exactly “being involved spiritually” really meant. I couldn’t grasp on the idea of meditating. For one, I never really could stay silent and just let my mind and senses withdraw from the external environment.

However, over the years, as I grew and entered the working life, I felt that everything was very ‘rushed’. I was as busy as ever but I never really felt settled/calm. That’s when I decided to try Yoga. So, I started going to trial classes and during my free time I find myself going to YouTube to learn more about Yoga. That’s when I decided that since I’m really interested in Yoga and I’m willing to spend time practicing and learning more about it, why not go for the course?

Union Yoga Ayurveda, Singapore (“UYA”) has definitely made this entire process an enjoyable one. Dr Satyam Tripathi and his staff at UYA (esp Ms Jia!) are extremely knowledgeable, patient, caring and most importantly, they make sure that everyone in class goes back home understanding what they have learnt that day. To me, that’s what makes a great instructor. At UYA, the school gives equal importance to performing and understanding Asanas, Kriyas, Pranayama and Meditation. As students, we are also exposed to Ayurveda practices and therapies that Dr Satyam performs on his clients and patients. He patiently explains the process of how the Ayurveda therapy combined with Yoga practices would help the patient. Moreover, Dr Satyam also encourages us to give classes to his clients so that we are able to get the adequate amount of experience. All these opportunities that I’ve received over the past 6 months is something I would not get if I were to be enrolled in other Yoga schools. Therefore, I am grateful to have been a student of Dr Satyam and UYA.

Yoga has made such a positive impact in my life. I feel happier and more settled in life now. I am able to focus better and be more efficient in my daily tasks.

Thank you Dr Satyam, Ms Jia, my fellow course mates and everyone at UYA.
It’s been such a pleasure!

Women make up nearly 30% of the total workforce in India. Till date, there has been no single, comprehensive, large, scale study carried out in the country which does justice to the problems faced by women in the workplace.

For 90% of the working women, the workplace is often the second job that they shoulder – even when they are career oriented women. All studies on stress therefore have to be focused taking into account the multiple stressors that women have to face.

5 myths about stress

Long hours of work can stress you

If you always believed that working long hours was the perfect trigger for creating stress, think again. Professor of Management and Department Chairman, Walton College of Business, Dan Ganster and his team have found that it is not how long you work but how you work that causes stress.

It is the company CEO and senior manageress who is most stressed.

Dr. Andrew Steptoe of University College, London found that, it was the senior executive women who suffered more stress. Where as stress induced heartburn and headaches happened lower down in the male workplace

Has Stress no effect on a woman’s fertility

Dr. Petra Arck of Charité, an institute of the University of Berlin has new evidence to show that stress can be an important cause for a healthy woman to have a sudden miscarriage.

Stressed women are more vulnerable to menstrual pain

Doctors in China have found that women who are stressed have double the risk of suffering pain during menstruation than women who are not stressed.

Housework is not stressful

Only a home maker knows how much stress she undergoes each day as she rushes to get the kids ready for school, the tiffin ready for her husband, children and herself even as she juggles with endless number of unfinished chores.

Yoga is an ideal stress buster for the working woman

Yoga is an ideal way for working women to combat stress.

At Arogya Dhama we have researched on the effects of several different yoga practices and have found that the regular practice of Bhujangasana, Salabhasana, Dhanurasana, Malasana, Sasankasana, Supta Vajrasana, and Bandhakonasana, Viparta Karani Kriya, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, Halasana, Sirsasana, followed by shavasana, nadishuddhi pranayama and meditation on om for about 5 mins can be beneficial to women who suffer from menstrual Issuess like decreased flow, pain during menses, irregular and reduced frequency of menstrual cycles. As mentioned about stress is not in the situation but it is your response pattern that causes all the distress. As a human race we all have the inbuilt freedom to change our response pattern towards a healthy and harmonious way. Yoga is the trick to do this. To reverse your pattern of response it is very important to practice slow breathing with awareness several times in a day even during working hours. The natural ability of a mother to nurture soft feelings of pure devotion is to be cultured as a special trick to handle stress.

Baddha Konasana

Baddha means caught, restrained. Kona means an angle. In this posture, sit on the floor, bring the hells near the perineum, catch the feet and widen the thighs until the knees touch the floor on either side. This is how Indian cobbler sit.

Technique

Sit on the floor with the legs stretched straight in front.

Bend the knees and bring the feet closer to the trunk.

Bring the soles and heels of the feet together and catching the feet near the toes, bring the heels near the perineum. The outer sides of both feet should rest on the floor, and the back of the heels should touch the perineum.

Widen the thighs and lower the knees until they touch the floor.

Interlock the fingers of the hands, grip the feet firmly, stretch the spine erect and gaze straight ahead or at the tip of the nose.

Place the elbows on the thighs and press them down. Exhale, bend forward, rest the head, then the nose and lastly the chin on the floor. Hold this position from half a minute to a minute to a minute with normal breathing.

Inhale, raise the trunk from the floor and come back to position (step 5)

Then release the feet, straighten the legs and relax.

Panic Issues

Panic Issues is diagnosed when an individual suffers at least two unexpected Panic Attacks, followed by at least 1 month of concern over having another attack. The frequency and severity of the attacks varies from person to person, an individual might suffer from repeated attacks for weeks, while another will have short bursts of very severe attacks.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is characterized by a fear of having a panic attack in a place from which escape is difficult. Many sufferers refuse to leave their homes, often for years at a time. Others develop a fixed route, or territory, from which they cannot deviate.
A panic attack typically lasts a few minutes and is one of the most distressing conditions a person can experience.

The aftermath of a panic attack could be very painful. Feelings of depression and helplessness are usually experienced. The greatest fear is that the panic attack will come back again and again, making life too miserable to bear.
Panic is not necessarily brought on by a recognizable circumstance, and it may remain a mystery to the person involved. These attacks come “out of the blue”. At other times, excessive stress or other negative life conditions can trigger an attack.

Panic and other anxiety Issuess are treatable conditions that respond well to relatively short-term therapy. The National Institutes of Mental Health is currently conducting a nationwide campaign to educate the general public and health care practitioners that panic and the other anxiety Issuess are some of the most successfully treated psychological problems.

Understanding Panic Issues according to Yoga.

According to yoga mind (citta) is defined as conglomeration of thoughts and it modifies itself into different forms (vrittis) be it perception, intellectual function, emotional response, memory, sleep or dream. Education is a process of channelising the flow of thoughts on to one topic. Sages consider anxiety or panic as a positive quality of the mind to form intensely on one topic. The capacity to dwell on a single topic with full capacity increases so much that he may lose the capacity to think of any thing else and hence go on to agoraphobia.

Hence in the sages way of understanding, Panic Issues is not a damaged mind but it is a highly powerful mind which is stuck in speeded up loop of thoughts picking up lot of energy that percolates into the entire body to speed up all functions. Since you energy level is so high you lose your equipoise and get lost in the whirlpool. If you understand the experience in this language, you realize your true potential that you have the energy and the positive capacity within you to undo the panic Issues too. You need to systematically lean the art of slowing down and calming down to mind. This is impossible during panic moments. Hence you need to work with your mind regularly daily in the morning after you wake up from sleep when the mind is relatively at its best. The steps to work up are –

Recognize the speed and force of the mind when you rehearse the experience.

Learn to recognize the rate of flow of thoughts in the mind during other moments. Realize that the mind is at its slowest rate whenever you are calm and contented.

Use regular practice of breathing to slow down the mind further. Check the rate of mind flow just before and after a practice of yogic fast breathing such as Kapalabhati.

Follow the principles of IAYT(Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy) to relax the body, slow down the breath and calm down the mind one hour daily.

Keep the yoga pill ready for use whenever you start feeling panicky. The capsule consist of “Kapalabhati – 60 rounds/min followed by abdominal breathing – 21 rounds and Loud ‘A’ chanting “. Repeat this cycle several times until the attack comes under your control.

Laghu Vajrasana

Laghu means little, small, easy as well as lovely, handsome, beautiful. Vajra means a thunderbolt, the weapon of Indra, the king of gods.

Technique:

Kneel on the floor with the knees and feet together. Rest the palms on the sides of the waist.

Exhale, arch the spine back and at the same time tighten the muscles of the thighs.

Push the hips forward and keep bending the spine back until the crown of the head rests on the feet. It requires great practice to achieve the necessary spinal elasticity. The weight of the body is borne only on the knees.

When the above position is achieved, remove the hands from the waist, stretch the arms straight from the shoulders and grip each knee with the respective hand.

Due to the spine being stretched and the pressure against the abdomen, breathing will be fast the laboured. Try to hold the pose from 10 to 15 seconds while breathing normally.

Exhale, keep the knees firm, raise the head and trunk until you are kneeling again. Then sit on the floor and rest.

WHAT IS SOCIAL ANXIETY?

Social anxiety is the third largest psychological problem in the world today, but few people understand this.

A woman hates to stand in line in the grocery store because she’s afraid that everyone is watching her.

A man finds it difficult to walk down the street because he is self-conscious and feels that people are watching him from their windows. A man hates to go to work because a meeting is scheduled the next day. He knows that these meetings always involve co-workers talking with each other about their current projects.

One of the worst circumstances, though, is meeting people who are “authority figures” such as bosses and supervisors at work. The anxiety level is very high and they’re so focused on “not failing” and “giving themselves away” that they don’t even remember what was said in the conversation.

Current research has shown that cognitive-behavioral therapy is highly successful in the complementary Management of social anxiety.

Yoga offers a solution to this type of problem through physical as well as breathing and meditation practices.

According to yoga this problem of social phobia/anxiety is recognized as excessive concentration of mind on you limitedness. The fact is that you are made of the unlimited stuff. The basic stuff of the universe with which we are all made of, is described as “Anantam” – endless, margin less and expansion. It is the years of habit of focused thinking that has coned on to this level of excessive concentration on inferiority complex. Hence the remedy for this social anxiety is to realize your true nature. Go on remembering “I am unlimited”, “I am made of the same stuff as all others around me”. “Every one loves me”, etc. Repeating this sentence several times in the day will be possible only after you have come out of the whirlpool of the speeded up loop of the mind which is pulling you down into the bottom of the river that shows up as anxiety and loss of self esteem.

Step I of yoga : “Recognition is half solution to the problem”. During your good moments, look at your own mind and get a glimpse of “What is freedom”. Try to relive that anxiety and make out the building up of the speed and constriction that is resulting in social anxiety

Step II : Reduce the speed of the mind. Start with gross level practices such as (a) simple vegetarian food. Food has enormous influence on mind which you may not make out now. It is only possible to recognize this effect much later when your mind is softer. Hence have faith in the experience of others who are softer, confident and blissful and follow the injunctions. If you eat non-vegetarian and spicy food mind becomes constricted; if you drink juices, eat vegetables, fruits and freshly cooked ( and served with love) grains without much spices, mind expands. (b) Cleansing technique – Sage Vasista says that constricted and speeded up manomaya kosa has settled down in pranamaya kosa as blockage of Nadis, in unhealthy functioning of nervous and digestive systems. Hence Kriyas, clean up the internal organs including digestive (dhouti), respiratory (kapalabhati) and nervous(trataka) systems. In initial days (3 to 4 weeks) you may perform these kriyas daily, later on, one has to do it once in a week. (c) Dynamic yoga asanas going on to advanced complex asanas. Fast dynamic repetition of simple. Movements of body followed by simple asanas in the best way to release the prana blocks in different nadis. Try this simple experiment. Do fast jogging for 100 counts and deserve the state of your mind you will be surprised to see that the mind slows down, anxiety vanishes and you feel every one around you are so loving and caring. When you go on with more and more difficult postures in which you maintain with feeling of ease and expansion it becomes an enjoyable experience.
When you are much upset and have to face a difficult situation, do Kapalabhati. Fast breathing used several times in the day is the best instantaneous remedy for releasing your mind. It may be a very temporary remedy but it is your own self corrective technique. Hence before you face your boss, do Kapalabhati and enter his room; then you can immediately remember your unlimited nature and not allow yourself to get lost in your loop of self annihilating thoughts.

Step 3 : is working directly with the mind. Japa is a wonderful tool. Since you have enormous capacity to concentrate, shift your mind after pranayama to Japa. Repeat long sentence (4 to 10 words) about your ishtadevata (beloved deity) at least 108 times per day. Fast repetition of the same name can work miracles during the episode of anxiety to shift your focus. Once the shift has happened even momentarily, you are ready for Step 4.

Step 4: Resolve. Repeating a sentences such as “I am confident”, “I am made of consciousness”, “I am unlimited” etc. is the way to completely come out of the whirlpool after you have struggled physically hard to move from the bottom of the river.

What a joyful sigh of relief when you can take one single breath of fresh air as soon as you are out of the water! The fight has succeeded by your self effort resulting in total effortless expansion and freedom from anxiety.

Read spiritual scriptures that describe your true nature for half an hour every. Start the day by repeating and dwelling on the thoughts of morning prayer “pratasmarana slokas by Shankaracharya, “Pratasmarami Hridisamphuradatma tatvam…………”.

Repeated regular practice for one hour daily of Asanas, pranayama, concentration practices and reading books can change your system remarkably even within days.
