We all would have experienced shaking of the hands when we were anxious and tensed. But this becomes a problem warranting medical help if it persists and disturbs the daily routine and could be an indication of nervous disease. Tremors refer to rhythmic alternating involuntary shaking of hands. Tremors could be fine or course. They could be action tremors (when an old lady tries to drink a glass of water) or rest tremors (seen at rest that disappears during action as in Parkinson’s disease).

The commonest cause of tremors is anxiety. When we are anxious the sympathetic nervous system is activated which releases stress chemicals such as adrenalin which is responsible for the hands to shake, heart to beat faster, blood pressure to shoot up etc . All these changes are meant to help us to cope up with the extra demand of the situation to fight or fly away from the danger. In the present day life style although there is no threat to life there are several self created pressures and reactions which create anxiety and the nervous system uses the same nervous and chemical mechanisms to produce these changes which may assume uncontrollable unnecessary proportions ..

How do yogis perceive this problem?.

Yogis said that anxiety is a state of mind where in the thoughts ( the sentences of internal dialogue) in the mind are running too fast. They defined anxiety as excessive Vega of the mind. Sage vasishtha asks us to do an internal experiment .Try to rehearse one of your experiences of severe anxiety and check the state of the mind during that experience. Take the example of you having to attend an interview. Let us presume that your nature is to get very anxious about such situations. The sage says if you check the words that flow in the mind when you are going through that state it may be like this.’ Oh! My God. This interview is very important. How I wish I do very well in this. What if I do not do well. —-‘ .These thoughts keep on rewinding in the mind so fast that it becomes an uncontrollable loop of thoughts which run like a whirlpool and pulls you into the state of anxiety. This then percolates to the physical level as excessive sweating, tremors etc. What started as a simple flow of reversible stream of thoughts, picked up speed and resulted in the nervous system to release the surge of electrical currents that further brought about all the responses?

Therefore the yogis suggest the remedial measures are in the mind itself. Yoga recommends us to learn the art of slowing down the mind. This is the definition of yoga. To be able to control the mind and bring it to a state of complete freedom from these surges of anxiety that result in anxiety related tremors is the aim of all yoga practices be it Asanas, or Pranayama, or meditation or cleansing techniques. Regular practice of a basic set of yoga should help in slowing down these thoughts that are running haywire. One needs to practice a set of 12 suryanamaskaras, kapalabhati kriya, nadishuddhi pranayama, and cyclic meditation.
Recently we had a case of anxiety neurosis at prashanthi kutiram who was having very bad tremors of the hands along with intense anxiety of impending death. He was crying for help when he came. In spite of the psychiatric medications he could not overcome these spells of intense fear which would result in bad tremors. After the regular practice of the basic set of yoga asanas specifically designed for the purpose along with all other techniques he went home two days ago with a happy smile on his face. He was a confident cheerful person who said “how simple are these techniques discovered by our sages that has made me a useful human being again!!!’

Sthiti: Dandasana

Sit in any meditative posture.

Keep your spine and neck erect perfectly vertical to the ground.

Close the eyes and collapse the shoulders.

Relax the whole body completely.

Practice

Practice rapid breathing with active and forceful exhalation and passive inhalation.

During each exhalation, blast out the air by vigorous flapping movements of the abdomen in quick succession.

Inhale passively by relaxing the abdominal muscles at the end of each exhalation.

Repeat the exhalation as quickly as possible at the rate of 60 strokes per minute.

At the end of one minute, stop the practice.

Now observe an automatic suspension of breath. In fact, there will be no urge for breathing for a few seconds.

Simultaneously the mind may experience a deep state of silence. Enjoy this state of deep rest and freshness.

Wait until the breathing comes back to normal

Note

Throughout the entire practice the spine must be kept erect without any movement of the trunk, neck or the face.

It is important to learn to allow the inhalation to happen automatically by relaxing the abdominal muscles at the end of each quick exhalation. l Kapalabhati can be practiced through alternate nostrils by alternately closing the right and left nostrils in Násika mudrá

Epilepsy is defined as a tendency to have repeated seizures that originate in the brain. Epilepsy can develop at any age. However, it is diagnosed most often before the age of 20 and after the age of 60. Epilepsy is a Issues with many possible causes. Anything that disturbs the normal pattern of neuron activity – from illness to brain damage to abnormal brain development – can lead to seizures. Epileptic seizures are due to a temporary interruption of brain activity, causing disturbance of consciousness or impaired awareness, strange or out of place sensations, or changes in movement or posture.

Primary Epilepsy is considered as “Adhija Vyadhi” – a Issuescaused by an internal imbalance within the system and not caused by an outside agent (such as infection). Although we know that external causes like head injury (old or recent) or infections (old or recent) can cause the epilepsy the commonest type of epilepsy has hereditary tendency as the cause. Stress anxiety, loss or lack of sleep, flickering light, fast breathing are some of the known triggers that could be the immediate cause for an attack.

The brain is a highly complex structure composed of millions of nerve cells (neurons) that generate and conduct electrical currents. These are responsible for a wide range of functions including consciousness, awareness, movement, body posture etc. In Epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed leading to signal abnormality.

Yoga defines this internal imbalance as an excessive reactivity to situation (known/unknwon) at manomaya kosa. This speed ‘Vega’ at the manomaya kosa triggers off very high electrical potentials in too many nerve cells in different parts of the brain. This heightened activity sends down a big shock that shows up as altered consciousness and body movements.

Once epilepsy is diagnosed, it is important to begin complementary Management as soon as possible. Most people with epilepsy lead outwardly normal lives. While epilepsy cannot currently be cured, for some people it does eventually go away. Most seizures do not cause brain damage. It is not uncommon for people with epilepsy, especially children, to develop behavioral and emotional problems, sometimes the consequence of embarrassment and frustration or bullying, teasing, or avoidance in school and other social setting. For many people with epilepsy, the risk of seizures restricts their independence (some states refuse drivers licenses to people with epilepsy) and recreational activities.

Most women with epilepsy can become pregnant, but they should discuss their epilepsy and the medications they are taking with their doctors. Women with epilepsy have a 90 percent or better chance of having a normal, healthy baby.

Yoga therapy aims at developing master over these excitations by training to develop an internal balance through technique of slowing down of activity at all levels. It is the deep rest to the mind body complex that heals.

The brain cells have to be given very deep rest by consious slowing down of thoughts though meditation. Hence loud chanting followed by mental chanting of AAA, UUU, MMM and OM as used in our Mind Sound Resonance technique (MSRT) is a very useful tool for epileptics. Any form of meditation which does not allow you to go off to partial sleep is vey useful. Meditation using body movements (Tai Chi, Cyclic meditation) or chanting (om meditation, MSRT) or Devotion to the divine (MEMT) or observing slow breathing may all be used.

Are there any yoga practices that are dangerous to epilepsy?

Any practice that involves fast breathing (Hyperventilation) could trigger off an attack and hence is contra indicated (Avoid kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Rabbit breathing, Mukhadhouti etc) Balancing postures are to avoided. What are the asanas that are good for epileptics? Forward bending and inverted postures are good Padahastasana, Sasankasana, Ardha Sirsasana, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana and their variations followed by deep relaxation technique. These postures help in bringing your awareness and concentration to the head region following which you can experience deep relaxation in the head region.

Is Trataka is good?

Trataka is very useful. Avoid doing trataka on flickering light.

PINDASANA IN SIRSASANA

Pinda means an embryo. From Padmasana in the head stand, the hips are flexed and the legs are lowered to touch the armpits.

Technique:

1. Do Padmasana in Sirsana, first place the right foot over the left thigh and the left foot over the right thigh.
2. Exhale flex the hips and take two breaths. Again with the exhalation lower the legs till they touch the arms near the armpits.
3. Stay in this position from 20 to 30 seconds with normal breathing.
4. Inhale, go back to Urdhva Padmasana, uncross the legs and stay in the sirsana for some time. Then cross the legs the other way and repeat the pose.
5. Relax the crossed legs one by one, stretch them back to sirsasana and then lower them gradually and straight to the floor with an exhalation.

Effect:
This posture has the same effects of Sirsasana. Balancing on the vertex requires enormous training in concentration. While balancing the awareness is brought to the pressure and increased activity in head regions. Focused attention followed by deep relaxation when you observe the ‘let go’ in the same area allows very deep rest to the head region (decreases the Vega both inside and outside).
Further crossed leg and balancing the padmasana on the arms in pindasana provides more intense training in focused attention which brings about balanced functioning of the Center Nervous System (CNS). Mastering the haphazard discharge of signals from the CNS and promote stable, balanced functioning of the CNS (Samatvam) is the basis of cure of epilepsy.

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia, also called tic douloureux, is a condition that affects the trigeminal nerve (the 5th cranial nerve), one of the largest nerves in the head. The trigeminal nerve is responsible for sending impulses of touch, pain, pressure, and temperature to the brain from the face, jaw, gums, forehead, and around the eyes. Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by a sudden, severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek. The Issues is more common in women than in men and rarely affects anyone younger than 50. The attacks of pain, which generally last several seconds and may be repeated one after the other, may be triggered by talking, brushing teeth, touching the face, chewing, or swallowing. The attacks may come and go throughout the day and last for days, weeks, or months at a time, and then disappear for months or years.

Is there any complementary Management in modern medicine?

complementary Management for trigeminal neuralgia typically includes anticonvulsant medications such as carbamazepine or phenytoin. Baclofen, clonazepam, gabapentin, and valproic acid may also be effective and may be used in combination to achieve pain relief. If medication fails to relieve pain, surgical complementary Management may be recommended.

Can Yoga reduces the pain?

According to yoga pain is a physical (annamaya kosa) manifestation of excessive speed of the prana. The uncontrolled excess of prana leads to construction and blockage of prana nadis (channels). In the system of acupuncture this is described as blockage of meridians through which the Chi(or QI) flows. These are two hints in yoga that helps you to manage your pain 1. Lean to feel the excessive activity in the area of pain. Pain is an experience of too many sensory nerves being triggered. 2.The trick to reduce pain is through slowing down this speed.

How to reduce this speed?

Through deep slow breathing. Breathing is a wonderful tool to reduce the speed of the mind and body. Focus you mind on the area of pain as you breath in defocus or slowdown and expand your awareness from this point of pain as you breath out. You can start off with fast breathing and then go reducing the rate of breathing. Start with 20 strokes of Kapalabhati, as you focus on the area of pain. Then breath slowly and expand your awareness. repeat 10 minits of practice of this alternate fast and slow breathing at least 5 times in a day.

The list other practices to be use in the management of Trigeminal Neurosis includes
1. Jogging
2. Ardhakati Cakrasana
3. Ardha Cakrasana,
4. Trikonasana
5. Neck movements – forward backward bending, right and left bending, clockwise and anticlockwise bending.
6. Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana
7. MSRT in Shavasana
8. Kapalabhati
9. Nadisuddhi – 9 rounds
10. Seetali/ Sithkari – 9 rounds

Parsva Sirsasanal

Parsva means side or flank. In this variation of Sirsasana, the trunk and legs are turned sideways on either side while balancing without disturbing the position of the head or hands.

Technique

1. From the straight Salamba Sirsasana, exhale and mover the spine with a twist to the right; except the head and the hands turn the body sideways.
2. The legs and navel should face sideways 90 degrees to their originals positions as in the illustrations. One should feel the stretch near the region of the floating ribs.
3. Hold the pose from 20 to 30 seconds with normal breathing.
4. Exhale, come back to the straight Salamba Sirsasana. Take a breath, exhale and repeat the pose on the left side for the same length of time exhale and come to the straight position of Salamba Sirsasana.

DESCRIPTION:

Atypical Facial Pain (ATFP) is a syndrome encompassing a wide group of facial pain problems. Facial pain, often described as burning, aching or cramping, occurs on one side of the face, often in the region of the trigeminal nerve and can extend into the upper neck or back of the scalp. Although rarely as severe as trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain is continuous for ATFP patients. Recent studies propose that ATFP is an early form of trigeminal neuralgia. Indeed, some patients have components of both ATFP and TN symptoms.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

ATFP has many possible causes. In some cases, infections of the sinuses or teeth appear to be involved. Some studies postulate a low-grade infectious and inflammatory process occurring over a long period can result in nerve damage with swelling and be the triggering factor for ATFP pain. Some believe that vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve in the same area that is postulated to lead to trigeminal neuralgia is a cause of ATFP although studies have shown that microvascular decompression rarely leads to pain relief in ATFP patients.

DIAGNOSIS

It’s not unusual for ATFP patients to have undergone numerous dental procedures, seen multiple doctors and undergone many medical tests before being diagnosed ATFP. A diagnosis of ATFP is usually a process of elimination. Yogic and oriental and systems of medicine diagnosis this condition as a prana level imbalance which has not yet resulted in any structural damage. The imbalance created by fast and erratic lifestyle leads to excessive flow of prana in the Nadis (meridians) that supply prana to this side of the face.

complementary ManagementS

complementary Management of ATFP can be difficult and perplexing for both doctor and patient. Medication is usually the first course of complementary Management. Surgical procedures such as microvascular decompression generally are not successful with ATFP patients. Pranayama or Acupressure or Acupuncture or Pranic healing along with lifestyle change with healthy habits has cured severed persons with ATPA.

Integrated Approach of yoga therapy for ATPA includes Kriya, yesterday I met a 45 year busy executive involves in several service organization traveling round the country. He developed a shooting pain in right half of face which spread from middle of the cheek right up to the head and down the mandible. This constant pain was so nagging that he needed tablets frequently. When the medicines did not give him lasting relief he decided to try meditation and went on doing “OM” meditation for one hour daily in the morning after his puja. Also he included daily Jalaneti and he now requires one or two tablets per month, that too only in the month of feb/ march when the weather changes from winter to summer in Bangalore. He requested me to tell every person with TN or ATFP that Jalaneti is a very effective technique along with right nostril breathing 27 rounds followed by Nadisuddhi for 9 rounds 4 times a day. He says practicing Jalaneti during the pain followed by OM meditation give him an immediate relief. He came to the centre only to deepen his knowledge of yoga and grow in spiritual depth.

The set of practices for ATPA include IAYT

Simple vegetarian diet use, less of raw vegetables to avoid excessive chewing movement on days when you have much pain. Instead use more of raw veg juices such as glass of cannot juice or white pumpkin juice (1/4 glass).

Follow the tenets of Yama and Niyama. Pick up any one of these intensely as your life’s tenet such as “never will I lie under whatever circumstance” or “Never will I hurt any one through my words or deed” etc.,

Daily Jala Neti

Asanas – Ardha Kati Cakrasana, PadaHastasana, Trikonasana, Vakrasana/ Ardhamatsyendrasana, Ustrasana, Bhujangasana, Salabhasana

Uni-nostril breathing – Chandra Anuloma Viloma or Surya Anuloma Viloma on the side of the pain followed by Nadisuddhi 4 times/ day.

Om meditation

Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga.

Vertigo is a type of dizziness that’s characterized by the sensation of spinning. It’s sometimes referred to as a hallucination of motion. Imagine what it would feel like to be placed suddenly on a roller coaster that won’t stop, and you begin to understand the alarming symptom of vertigo.
So, anyone with the symptom of vertigo should be seen immediately by a doctor in order to determine the cause. If you can’t get in by appointment, then obtain a ride to your local emergency room. They’re well equipped to do the required initial evaluation, and provide relief from the unpleasant symptoms, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Don’t drive or operate machinery until cleared by your physician.
Dizziness, vertigo, and motion sickness all relate to the sense of balance and equilibrium. Researchers in space and aeronautical medicine call this sense spatial orientation, because it tells the brain where the body is “in space:” what direction it is pointing, what direction it is moving, and if it is turning or standing still.
Your sense of balance is maintained by a complex interaction of the following parts of the nervous system:
The inner ears (also called the labyrinth), which monitor the directions of motion, such as turning, or forward-backward, side-to-side, and up-and-down motions.
The eyes, which monitor where the body is in space (i.e. upside down, rightside up, etc.) and also directions of motion.
The skin pressure receptors such as in the joints and spine, which tell what part of the body is down and touching the ground.
The central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), which processes all the bits of information from the four other systems to make some coordinated sense out of it all.
The symptoms of motion sickness and dizziness appear when the central nervous system receives conflicting messages from the other four systems.

Causes of vertigo

Circulation: If your brain does not get enough blood flow, you feel light headed. It is sometimes seen in patients with inadequate cardiac (heart) function or with anemia.
Excess salt in the diet also leads to poor circulation. Sometimes circulation is impaired by spasms in the arteries caused by emotional stress, anxiety, and tension.
If the inner ear falls to receive enough blood flow, the more specific type of dizziness occurs-that is-vertigo. The inner ear is very sensitive to minor alterations of blood flow and all of the causes mentioned for poor circulation to the brain also apply specifically to the inner ear.

Injury: A skull fracture that damages the inner ear produces a profound and incapacitating vertigo with nausea and hearing loss. The dizziness will last for several weeks, then slowly improve as the normal (other) side takes over

Infection: Viruses, such as those causing the common “cold” or “flu,” can attack the inner ear and its nerve connections to the brain. This can result in severe vertigo, but hearing is usually spared..

Allergy: Some people experience dizziness and/or vertigo attacks when they are exposed to foods or airborne particles (such as dust, molds, pollens, danders, etc.) to which they are allergic.
Neurological diseases: A number of diseases of the nerves can affect balance, such as multiple sclerosis, syphilis, tumors, etc. These are uncommon causes.
Yoga postures can improve balance and stimulate the nervous system to help alleviate dizzy spells. Postures are choosen, that activate the nervous system and the balance centers in the inner ear, as well as building focus and concentration.

Cluster Headache although rare has a characteristic pattern. It comes on suddenly, lasting 30-45 minutes at the same time each day lasting a few weeks. The attacks occur in “clusters” of a few weeks with headache free period of a few months to even a year. Although difficult to find out a specific cause we can call this as another lifestyle related Issues.

Yoga Techniques for Cluster Headache

During episodes of acute head ache the yogic understanding about the prana imbalances is useful to get immediate relief. The Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy is to push yourself into Anandamaya Kosa which is free from pain and full of ease, and calmness. To achieve this you need to work at all levels.

At the Vijnanamaya kosa it is important to work with fearlessness. The notion “I have pain but must I suffer” has helped several patients with severe pain. Pain is yet another form of nerve impulse just like sensors of hot, cold, touch etc., “you should try and disconnect your feeling of suffering from the unpleasant nerve impulse. “This is very difficult but not impossible. I need you to detach from the body and become an objective observer.

coming down to the Manomaya Kosa, recognize the speeded up loop of thoughts in your mind which whirls around suffering. “Let me slow down the speed and violence in these thoughts” is the next difficult step. To assist this slowing down and develop the attitude of an observer, start working with the prana by using physical and breathing movements. Though vigorous movements of limbs and fast breathing see how you can diffuse the pain even temporarily. This temporary cassation or reduction in pain is due to release of blockage of prana in the nadis in the painful area. This is a manifestation of excessive speed and constriction of prana. Once you reduce the speed, you can now start diffusing the prana by an imagery of “unwinding the spring packed up in a box of your skull or “diffusion of light and heat from the hot painful source of light at the point of pain”.

What physical and breathing practices would help during painful days of cluster headache?

For immediate relief –

1. Spot jogging (20 – 40) with awareness of the feet and toes while counting the steps and suggesting that you are pushing the prana down to the feet.
2. Mukha Dhouti (20 – 40) with the same awareness of exhaling out the speeded up blocks from the head.
3. Chanting “AAA” 9 times to feel the soft vibrations in the Naval region.
4. sit in Shasankasana for 10 seconds to observe the painful zone.

Repeat this cycle of 5 minutes three times. Repeat this capsule of 15 minutes, 4 times a day on empty stomach.

Daily practice list of one hour after the severity has come down includes asanas, pranayama, chanting and Kriyas as given in the list below.

Special Practices for Headache

Loosening and Breathing Exercises
Rotation of shoulders, Neck Bending, Neck Rotation, Hand Stretch breathing, Tiger Breathing, Sasankasana Breathing, Head Rolling, Surya Namaskara Quick Relaxation Technique.
Pranayama
Kapalabhati, Vibhaga Pranayama, Candra Anuloma, Nadi Suddhi, Brahmari .
Meditation (Dharana Dhyana)
Nadanusandhana, OM Meditation
Kriyas
Jala Neti, Sütra Neti, Vaman Dhouti

VASISTHASANA

Technique:

1. Stand in Tadasana, bend forward, rest the palms on the floor adn take the legs back about 4 to 5 feet as if you are doing Adho Mukha Svanasana.
2. Turn the whole body sideways to the riht and balance on the right had and foot only. The outer side of the right foot should rest firmly on the floor. Place the left foot over the right one, rest the left palm on the left hip and balance, keeping the body straight. In order to learn the art of balancing in this position, be close to a wall so that the inner side of the right foot rests against it.
3. Exhale, bend the left leg at the knee, move the body slightly forward and catch left big toe between the thumb and the index and middle finger of the left hand. Pull the left arm and the left leg up vertically. Balance in this position, keeping the arms and legs rigid, with deep breathing, for about 20 to 30 seconds.
4. Release the toe grip, rest the left leg again over the right foot and lower the left hand to the hip once more.
5. Exhale, turn the body over to the left so that it balances only on the left hand and left foot. Repeat the pose on this side for the same length of time, following the technique stated above, reading right for left adn left for right.
