Adenoids occurs commonly in children and is associated with tonsillitis. The symptoms of adenoiditis are the same as chronic cold with running nose excessive sneezing and blocking of nose associated with fever. If the child does not improve in 3 to 4 days it may require a course of antibiotic. Repeated episodes of adenoiditis leads to chronic ill health, poor academic performance, loss of weight and slowing down of physical growth. Another major problem of children with chronic adenoiditis is persistent nose blockage that results in mouth breathing which can even lead to remolding of the shape of the jaw bones which are in the process of growth.

What is adenoid gland?

Adenoids is one of the gate keepers of the throat similar to tonsils. This gland is situated in the centre just behind the nose in uppermost part of the throat which tonsils are situated on the two sides of the lower part of the throat behind the tongue. They contain white blood cells (lymphocytes) which can recognize and fight any foreign dangerous enemy cells such as bacteria or viruses that may enter the body through the air we breathe in or the food we eat. Although this happens unnoticed every day in all of us, as a regular scavenging process it may end up with an active fight (inflammation) disturbing the entire personality just like border security force may declare war now and then when the whole country (Pura) gets toknow that there is a big invasion. (pura=country or city – the body, Purusha=the person who resides in the city or the body).

This inflammation is termed adenoiditis. If this happens repeatedly it is called chronic adenoiditis.

Why chronic adenoiditis?

Repeated episodes of inflammation (war) may happen if the enemies are too may or too strong or white blood cells (WBCs – our soldiers in adenoids) are too weak. This cells for recruitment of more WBCs to the adenoids so that the war can be successfully handled. Hence chronic swelling and enlargement of adenoids. In this process, body’s nutritional resources are tampered which results in poor growth of the child.

What can yoga do for chronic adenoids?

Yoga has the ability to completely cure this condition and normalize the positive health of the child by increasing the fighting power of the WBCs. Which can successfully get rid of the enemies in a short time.

What practices are useful?

The child has to practice 25 minutes of physical practices 15 minutes of breathing techniques followed by 10 minutes of Deep relaxation. They include

Loosening exercise – Jogging (50 counts), jumping(20 counts). Fast forward backward bending with Jerky exhalation (20 counts) and twisting (20 counts).

Dynamic suryanamaskaras 10 counts(24rounds) with Mukha dhouti 3 times in between.

Maintain in Sashankasana for 3 mins

This should be followed by Breathing techniques including
a) Kapalabhati 60/min, 6 rounds alternating with slow breathing pranayamas.
b) nadisudhi 9 rounds
c) suryanuloma viloma, 9 rounds
d) bhramari, 9 rounds
e) ujjayi, 9 rounds
f ) simha mudra with loud roaring , 5 rounds and
g) DRT- 10 mins with breathing, chanting A,U,M and Om and imagery of sky to expand and let go

How does Yoga help?

Yoga help by giving very deep rest to the soldiers’ (WBC) in all parts of the body in general and those in adenoids and tonsils in particular. Once rested they become more efficient. This is the secret of Karma Yoga. When WB cells can rests deeper and deeper, they get rejuvenated and function more effectively. The level of rest achieved should be experienced at the end of each session daily as a very refreshing relaxation, slow breathing and clear cool calm mind free from anger, fear or agitation in the child.

PADMA PINDASANA – Double Closed Lotus

The purpose of Breathing is to take oxygen from air by drawing it into the chest and to throw out the waste gas, carbon dioxide. The respiratory system is suitably designed to provide necessary gas exchange surface area in the air sacs. These air sacs look like branches of grapes in the lung. To enable the air to reach these small, deep seated, air sacs air has to pass through the initial air passages. The big tree of air tubes start from the nose; goes through the throat, the voice box, windpipe, bronchi and ends in broncheoli. The branches divide and re-divide spreading into majority of the lung space. Bronchi are not just passive solid tube but are rigid enough not to collapse during forced exhalation. The bronchi have important function such as

To open up more widely when more ventilation is required during exercise (called bronchial dilation) or narrow-down if damaging, toxic air tends to enter the air sacs (broncho-constriction).

Also these tubes have enormous amount of ‘border security’ function. They protect against any germ-invasion (infection) that may result in local bronchitis spreading to the whole body.

Bronchiectasis is a condition where both these functions are damaged. Eetsia means abnormal widening; ectasia of bronchus means they have lost the capacity to increase or decrease the caliber of the tube. This happens because of damage to the elastic material of the air tubes.

What are the causes?

The commonest cause of damage to the structure of bronchus is common childhood infections such as measles, whooping cough, pneumonia etc. In adults this condition is seen after a major pneumonia or infective bronchitis. By birth the bronchial tubes are widened and have very minimal pliability. Thus Bronchiectasis may also be congenital.

In addition, the lining of the bronchi are unhealthy with poor defense and hence they become vulnerable to infections. This leads to repeated episodes of infection alternating with periods of healing which further results in sear formations that lead to further damage. This process increases the damage to the bronchi. Later these damaged tubes become a permanent home for many dangerous germs which can lead to blood related infections also.

What are the symptoms?

Repeated episodes of cough, phlegm and fever, that require antibiotics. The doctor suspects bronchiectasis. X-ray and other tests confirm the suspicion. Characteristic complaint is of bringing out of large quantities of sputum after getting up in the morning that looks and smells like pus. In dry bronchiectasis they may produce sputum with blood.

What is the role of Yoga?

Yoga can work at two levels

Cleansing the air passages

Improving immunity to infection

For cleansing of air passages, start the daily practices with about 10-12 physical postures. Start with standing asanas alternating between backward bending, forward bending, right bending and left bending. Begin with fast alternating forward backward bending, bend with breathing. Then maintain in Ardhachakrasana with normal breathing followed by Padahastasana (for 3 minutes) with normal breathing. After this (sometimes during this if cough comes up) do mukha dhouti and cough actively to bring out all the phlegm. Repeat in the same order for side bending and twisting too – fast side bending with breathing, slow maintenance with awareness in Trikonasana – cough and mukha dhouti. Clear the phlegm.

Go on this way with three supine postures, 3 prone postures end with 3 sitting postures. Finally a deep rest in Shavasana will give a clean feeling. Everyalternate day practice Neti and Vamana dhouti Kriya which will be very useful for this cleansing. Kapalabhati Kriya practiced 4 times a day is important to prevent accumulation of unhealthy trapped deoxygenated air in the damaged bronchi.

To prevent repeated infections and also to fight the infection effectively, it is important to go into very deep restful state of body and mind through different pranayama and meditation techniques. At VYASA we have been teaching simple pranayama practices followed by MSRT and PET. All these meditative techniques end with silent expanded calm state of mind in which the resolve works.

Stress management is very important as stress is an important aggravating factor for poor immunity.

Several cases of Bronchiectasis treated at this centre have remained healthy with good quality of life with regular practice of IAYT.

MRIGASANA – the Deer

Starting Position: Prone posture
Breathing: normal

Lie on the abdomen. Bend the elbows and place the chin in the hands.

Breathing normally look at a point in the distance.

Bending the knees alternately move the right and left leg up and down slowlyand in a relaxed way.

Benefits:
Has a very relaxing and balancing effect upon body and mind. Especially beneficial for relaxing the supine, hips and knees. Relaxes the digestive system and deepens the breath and promotes concentration.

Bronchial asthma is a common Issuesof both children and adults. The word “Asthma” is of Greek derivation and it means panting or gasping. Not all difficulty in breathing is asthma. The prefix bronchial to refer to the fact that the basic problem is in the bronchi, the lower air conducts within the lungs.
Bronchial asthma is characterized by recurrent attacks of difficulty in exhalation due to wide – spread reversible narrowing of airways in the lungs, which varies in severity over a short period of time either spontaneously or as a result of complementary Management.
The characteristic feature of asthma is that it is only a temporary functional narrowing which is completely reversible.
The most important feature in bronchial asthma is the hyper reactivity of bronchial tree. The air passages show excessive response by spasm and inflammation to all sorts of stimuli, not only to antigen or chemical like histamine but also to cold air, atmospheric irritants like dust, kitchen fumes, sprays, gases, extreme exercise etc.,
Hay fever and allergic rhinitis are the other names for nasal allergies. The three cardinal symptoms of this condition are sneezing, running nose and blocked or stuffy nose. This may occur seasonally as in Hay fever or personality almost all year round. You may also have itching of nose, ears, eyes, throat and post nasal discharge. At times, the inner lining (mucous membrane) of the Para nasal sinuses may get involved in this allergic inflammation leading to pain and discomfort in the forehead and cheeks. Although not a fatal condition, it could lead to much discomfort, loss of interest at work and psychological depression.
Exposure to cold wind, sunlight, dust and fumes, etc., may precipitate the onset of the symptoms. Exactly like in bronchial asthma the inner lining of the nose has turned hyper – reactive.

NASAL ALLERGY

Persons with Nasal Allergy (NA) also have similar nasal complaints such as irritation, sneezing, running nose and blockage.

What is the difference?

Nasal Allergy is not associated with fever, body aches etc. as in common cold and hence, it may not disturb your daily routine. It is usually seasonal; trouble you early mornings and late evenings; there are usually recognizable triggers like weather, cold air, dust, smoke, pollen etc.,

What causes Nasal Allergy?

Unlike common flu, this is not caused by any infection, although it appears that the problem is caused by outside agents like dust, pollen etc., this as an ‘allergic reaction’. Allergy means altered reaction, i.e., this is not a normal reaction of the body. Normal persons nose does not consider cold air or dust or parthenium as dangerous and have no irritation. If you are allergic, your nasal lining sends messages to the brain and the immune system that there is a dangerous foreigner that is being inhaled and thus the array of soldiers (white blood cells etc.,) are recruited to fight (inflammation) away the enemy in the nose leading to all the symptoms – sneezing – protective mechanism to blast away the enemy, running nose – to wash off the enemy, and blockage – to prevent entry of the enemy.

Why does the body do this wrong sensing? What is its cause? Is it related to stress?

Yes, stress is a well-known trigger that activates the basic allergic tendency, which is inherited. This tendency for over sensitivity may be found in some of your family members in the form of allergy to some foods or skin allergy etc., and stress acts as a trigger to unfold this tendency and makes you suffer from nasal symptoms. For example, a cousin of mine gets bad periods of early morning sneezing and nose blocking in in winters whenever he goes through patches of financial problems in his business.

What is the yogic remedy?

According to Yoga, Nasal Allergy is considered as a manifestation of a minor imbalance in Prana and hence we get very quick results in persons who undertake the practice or Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy. Regular practice of a basic set of breathing exercises (Tiger breathing, rabbit breathing, sasankasana breathing), loosening exercises (jogging, twisting), suryanamaskara, yogasanas (12 postures in standing, sitting, prone and supine positions), pranayama, meditation (on “OM”) along with the lifestyle change through Jnana, Karma and Bhakti yoga are to be learnt to overcome the problem of Nasal Allergy. Kriyas form a mainstay in the yogic management of Nasal Allergy. Jalaneti involves yogic nasal wash by saline water. (Described in an earlier article in this series). This is a training that helps in self-retraining your over-reactive lining of the nose. When you do jalaneti voluntarily, you are accepting to teach your nose to tolerate the irritant (the saline water) and through this you are teaching your nose to tolerate even the other substances such as dust or pollen or cold air, which your body had unnecessarily presumed as dangerous substances. Can you see how this could be related to your personality? Are you a sensitive person at the emotional level and have difficulty in expressing it? Psychologists say that if you cannot express your feelings of frustration, anxiety or anger it shows up as Nasal Allergy. So IAYT teaches you how to overcome your emotional sensitivity. Thus yoga is the real way to cure your Nasal Allergy, as it teaches you how to correct the imbalances “yourself” to cure your body.

PADANGUSTHASANA

Pada means the foot. Angustha is the big toes. This posture is done by standing and catching the big toes.

1. Stand in Tadasana. Spread the legs a foot apart.
2. Exhale, bend forward and hold the big toes between the thumbs and the first two fingers, so that the palms face each other. Hold them tight.
3. Keep the head up, stretch the diaphragm towards the chest and make the back as concave as possible. Instead of stretching down from the shoulders, bend forward from the pelvic
4. Keep the legs stiff and do not slacken the grip at the knees and toes. Stretch the shoulder-blades also. Take one or two breaths in this position.
5. Now exhale, and bring the head in between the knees by tightening the knees and pulling the toes without lifting them off the floor. Remain in this pose for about 20 seconds, maintaining normal breathing.
6. Inhale, raise the head, release to toes and stand up. Return to Tadasana.
